My Work Experience Story
25th July 2024By Corey Timbrell
After a week of work experience, I would like to share my thoughts of working with Simas Accounting & Tax.
As a student, going to work experience can be captivating as it gives insights on what the environment of a workplace is like. Or could be alarming, as you have never done something like this and will not know anyone when you arrive.
Whatever you think of it, you will think back in your future, that it was a beneficial choice of doing a work experience. I found out that the team had a personality that made the workplace feel accepting and at ease for me. This was because of how approachable everyone is and how relaxed the environment is.
What it had to offer for me
On my arrival I was met with Aran who let me in and then Tom gave me a tour of the workplace and set up my Xero login.
My first assignment set was to complete my Xero certificate training giving me a start to my CV. Then I went on to view the work of Petra which made me understand how challenging accountancy can be even being very clever. I then went on to learn some key office skills; scanning, filing and shredding with Aran.
My favourite part of this experience is learning what the world of work has to offer for me later on in life.
Positives of work experience on the student
The positives of going to work experience are such as; having the opportunity to meet and communicate with new individuals, gaining new knowledge on what you can do in the future and what to do for it now. I also learned the ins and outs of a workplace, having the key things to remember for your later life in work. Finally being able to gather new skills so you can start nurturing behaviours that will help you excel.
Positives of work experience on the company
There are many positives of having work experience students for the company. Some are quite obvious like how the company gains knowledge on a student and if they find them suitable they may be able to hire them easier in the future. This is because they know of what the company does and the work they do there. Some less obvious reasons include; the company gains an extra worker to help with things that they might not be able to do as quickly without the support of the student. In addition, accepting a student into your work can raise your profile in the community. This is due to the fact that you are seen as preparing young people for careers. By having work experience students you are also getting fresh ideas for your company to use in the future.
After my experience at Simas Accounting & Tax I have been shown the life of working as an accountant. I really enjoy the idea of going down this line of work in the future. From this experience I believe I am more knowledgable and this makes me more confident in my feelings around accountancy.
A Note From Simas
The whole team have really enjoyed working with Corey this week. He fitted into the office environment really well and very quickly became part of the team. We have been really impressed with how he embraced all of the tasks and duties that he had the opportunity to be part of. Corey worked very hard when supporting one of our accountants to complete the bookkeeping for a client. He diligently completed the Xero Bookkeeping training and certification. Being Xero certified is a wonderful achievement! Well done. Corey very quickly learned how to complete general admin tasks like; scanning, shredding and filing.
Corey has a very good attitude to learning and listened well to each member of staff. He is a very polite and friendly student who was an asset to our team.
Corey is a great ambassador for Bedford Academy and we wish him every success for the future.
